In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation , the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.  Read more

REVIEW

If you're a QT fan or just love movies, especially 70s action and 'revenge-amatic' movies then not reading this whole book in one sitting is like being an alcoholic trying to go easy on a small batch whiskey bottle you want to make last the weekend. Peckinpah, Scorsese, McQueen, Bronson, Schrader and De Palma especially are deep dived into, and the most important 'speculation' of all is asked, what would Taxi Driver look like if directed by Brian De Palma instead of Scorsese as originally planned? Most important to the T fans, too - you get to meet Floyd, his mom's sometime black room guest, a film lover and would-be screenwriter, ever recruiting young Q to help him on his mammoth black western script, just helping pave the way towards Tarantino's impressive 30-year run of consistently amazing scripts and directing. Floyd, every film lover who knows the score owes you big time!
