REVIEW

This is one of those books I finally read because so many people hype it up on TT. I wasn’t sure whether I’d ever cave because I usually detest the books that people in the high masses love but it was free so I gave it a shot. The book is nothing unique or new, I feel like I’ve read stories like this countless times but like many romance readers, I can read the same exact story over again because the universal fantasies attached to said story. The story was more entertaining than it was mind blowing. The first part of the book feels kind of romcomish. It’s hard to explain, you really have to read it to see it, but the the climax of the book it goes dark, so it’s almost like she didn’t know what she wanted to do with it and just decided to do it all. What I do appreciate was that this wasn’t a mafia book. When I saw he was Ukrainian I thought it might shift to that and while I’m not yucking someone else’s yum, I just can’t lose myself in a mafia romance because that lifestyle isn’t s*xy to me. Anywho, the lead heroine was Chinese descent, which you don’t see a lot in mainstream romances. Although…..outside of her saying she was Chinese American, there was no other indication that she was East Asian. She didn’t eat Asian food, she rarely described herself and when she did it was laced in insecurity. She could have been palm colored and it would not have mattered because there was nothing distinct about her character that distinguished her from a yt girl. That was my biggest complaint I think. All the yt ppl she ever encountered were described in great and flattering detail. I read a WoC in a romance I want her to stand out and this heroine was a bit wishy washy so she was forgettable. She was also super infantilized and I couldn’t relate to that at ALL. She had no spunk and was far from independent. The weird thing was the location floated from MD and DC and there was no mention or semblance of Blk folk🥹 Kind of made me feel like the author has never been to MD or DC because there was no mention of DC culture at all. I’m reading it going🥹🥹🥹Is this Maine or DC? Obviously no other readers mentioned that but as a Blk reader, it’s just something I’m privy to. Their trauma made them bond and clearly the twists made the later half pick up in the sagging middle but I just needed Alex to grovel more🥹He apologized a total of 3 times and that just wasn’t enough for me😆 Imma read the next book because a bodyguard romance sounds like my cuppa tea. Overall I give the book a 3.75 but rounded it up to four because it was unrealistic and entertaining af.
